StarTimes UPL: Express extends unbeaten home run with win against Police

Express FC 2-0 Police FC - StarTimes UPL

Express FC extended its unbeaten home run in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League to eleven games with a 2-0 win against Police FC in a scrappy match played on a waterlogged Betway Muteesa II Stadium, Wakulukuku on Saturday.

Wasswa Bbosa’s side is now level on points with second-placed Vipers, having played a game more and four below top-placed URA FC.

The Red Eagles broke the deadlock as early as the fourth minute of the game when Eric Kambale capitalized on a poor clearance by Police goalkeeper Derrick Ochan to net in his 8th goal of the season and his side’s first of the game.

Due to the poor playing surface, Police were forced to make two substitutions in the opening half, bringing on Herman Wasswa and Brian Mululi for Muwada Mawejje and Henry Kiseka respectively.

The first half ended in favor of the home side who has a goal advantage.

Upon return, Express FC extended their advantage just after the break when Geoffrey Lwesibawa’s shot from the near post ended up in the back of the net after it proved so hard for Ochan to save.

Moments later, Kambale had a chance to get his second of the game but was denied a clear goalscoring by the waterlogged pitch after getting into a one on one with Ochan.

With 70 minutes on the clock, the Cops were awarded a penalty following a reckless foul on Duncan Sseninde by Mahad Yaya, but Ben Ocen who stepped up had his spot-kick effortlessly saved by Mathias Muwanga.

Express FC head coach Wasswa Bbosa then introduced Frank Kalanda for Kambale in the 74th minutes to spice up things upfront and hand Kambale a rest.

Few minutes after coming on, Kalanda missed two clear-cut chances in quick succession. First, he missed from close range after brilliant work by Lwesibawa before Martin Kizza set him up to send his effort agonizingly above the crossbar and into the skies.

The result sees Express maintain their third place but now move level on points with Vipers with 46 points in 22 games, four adrift of top-placed URA FC.

They also extend their unbeaten streak at home to 11 games, having garnered seven wins and four draws this season at Wakulukuku. Police stay 5th with 37 points and will host fourth-placed KCCA FC next.
