Scott Low, Ampaire Shakira shine brightest at the SOM Easter Blitz Chess Championship

Experience took its course as Scott Low won Best Open Section of the Sports Outreach Ministries (SOM) Easter Blitz Chess Championship on Friday afternoon.

Low, a retired player with American descent holding a passion of playing Chess was so happy to lift the title despite his slow start which he attributed to nerves.

“The tournament was really nice, to play for the first time in several years was nerve racking especially my first game” Low stated

“I haven’t played something like this in a long time, there were mistakes here and there but I was able to recover, the opposition was tough but managed to come out on top” he added

The tournament began at exactly 2pm with each game being played for three minutes but the prowess and quality showcased by the players was up to the standard and near to perfection.

An Indian of American descent Mallana Kavyashree stood out with a huge example of sportsmanship sponsoring the event with atmost pleasure and taking part in it.

“I am very grateful to Robert Katende for giving me a chance to sponsor this tournament ” she said after being given time to say something during the rewarding ceremony.

Kavyashree, a retired competitive chess player finished fourth (4th) in the Best Ladies Section where she was to get a cash prize of 50,000 Uganda Shillings but decided to gift it to the fifth (5th) in line so that the 5th could gift hers to the sixth (6th) best Ainembabazi Promise Siarah.

After the ceremony, she came out to commend and praise the different players at the tournament;

“They are sharp and fast, this is what we need since Blitz has become so popular lately ” she said

Adding that;” Before it used to be classic only but not have some good youngster who are complimented by the top rated players who will be of help”

“Personally I didn’t find much of my balance in the games but was happy I finished fourth after coming out of retirement of many years (with smiles!) so thanks to Robert ” she concluded

The Best Ladies Section was won by Ampaire Shakira who walked away with a Gold medal and Cash Prize of 200,000 Uganda Shillings.

Mugide Safinah came out in second with Four (4) points, one below Ampaire to bag a cash prize of 150,000 Ug. Shs
