Ugandans Winnie Nanyondo and Halima Nakaayi have advanced to the Olympics 800m semi-final in Tokyo.

This is after Nanyondo (2:02:03) finished second in her semi-final heat behind France’s Renelle Lamote (2:01:92) while her colleague Nakaayi advanced as one of the best losers, finishing fourth in her heat with 2:00:92.

The semi-final will take place tomorrow while final of the 800m women race will take place on Tuesday 3rd August 2021.

Earlier on, Uganda’s other athlete, Albert Chemutai finished ninth in heat 1 of the Men’s 3000m steeplechase and failed to qualify for the final.

At 1pm, Uganda’s trio of Prisca Chesang, Sarah Chelangat and Esther Chebet willbe targeting a place in the finals of the 5000m women’s race. Chesang and Chelangat are in heat 1 while Chebet is in heat 2.

While late on, Another Ugandan trio of Joshua Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo and Stephen Kissa will be targeting Uganda’s first medals at the 2020 Olympics when they take the field for the 10,000m men’s final race.

Cheptegei is the world’s number one in the 10,000 meters as he holds the race world record (26:11:00).
