StarTimes Uganda Premier League new entrants Kyetume FC are facing relegation to the FUFA Regional League for failing to fulfill the set club licensing conditions set for clubs that feature in the top flight.
The Mukono based side faces relegation on account that they failed to present and register the required number of players on the FUFA Connect System.
The development was confirmed by Uganda Premier League CEO Bernard Bainamani on Tuesday morning while appearing on the “Sport This Morning ” show on NBS Sports.
According to the Federation, the deadline to register the reuired minimum number of 18 players on the system was Friday, August 12th, but the Kyetume failed to beat that deadline prompting, a sanction that prompts a decision for their relegation down to the FUFA Regional League.
However, Kyetume has been given upto Monday, 22nd August to appeal and put everything in order.
“Kyetume FC still have a chance to come back to the UPL but if we are to make the league grow, we need to be serious with rules guiding the sport , club licensing being one of them.” Club Licensing chairman Rogers Mulindwa told NBS Sport.
Kyetume Chairman, Ruben Mubiru Kaggwa, believes Kyetume will be playing in the top flight this coming season if only the Federation is there to help them grow as a club and not just hatch a plan to wrongfully oust them from the competition.
“We as a club are young and need a lot of guidance to grow into the game. We need help. We are doing our best to adhere to all the rules and regulations and this is not deliberate that we refused to adhere,” Ruben said during an interview with Radio Simba.
“We will respond as needed and will be waiting for the Federation to take a decision at a later stage that is not just meant to punish us.” He added.
Rumours have been circulating that the most violent side in Ugandan Football, Kataka FC, could take Kyetume’s place should push come to shove, considering the fact that there are no funds and time to organise for a more sporting approach to their promotion.
Kyetume finished third in the StarTimes FUFA Big League last season to gain promotion to Uganda’s top tier league.
The 2022/23 StarTimes Uganda Premier League is tentatively set to kickoff on September 30th and end on June 4th.
