Express Football Club have stepped up their preparations for the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League campaign with the addition of three experienced players.

The Red Eagles confirmed on Friday that goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya, defender Shafik Batambuze and forward Derrick Ddungu, popularly known as Rickman Rickie, have joined the club.

The signings form part of Express’ wider efforts to reshape the team ahead of the new season, with the club looking to build a squad capable of competing strongly in the top flight.

Kigonya brings considerable regional experience to the goalkeeping department. The shot-stopper has previously featured in Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe, giving him valuable exposure to different football environments.

Batambuze also returns to Ugandan football with a wealth of experience accumulated across the region. The left-back has previously played in Kenya and Tanzania, as well as representing the Uganda Cranes.

Ddungu’s return to competitive football is perhaps the most intriguing of the three moves. He previously played in Sweden before a knee injury forced him away from the game for an extended period.

During his time away from football, Ddungu established himself in Uganda’s entertainment industry, releasing music before taking up a role as a radio presenter at 106.5 NRG Radio.

Express are also reportedly working on further additions to their squad. Alpha Thierry Ssali has been linked with a return to the club from KCCA, where opportunities for regular playing time have reportedly been limited.

The Red Eagles have already secured the return of Isaac Wagoina, who rejoins Express after spending the past two seasons at BUL FC.

With the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League season scheduled to get underway on August 28, Express will now focus on integrating their new arrivals as they prepare for the new campaign.
