Cricket: Samwiri Walusimbi honoured at Lugogo

On Saturday afternoon, the Cricket fraternity gathered at Lugogo Cricket Oval to celebrate the life of Samwiri Walusimbi.

Walusimbi is a legend in the game of cricket as he is a former player, coach and administrator of the gentleman’s games and he is regarded the best Uganda has ever produced.

An initiative for Uganda Cricket Association and Tusker Lite to honour legends when they are still alive, it was Walusimbi turn to honoured for the wonderful impact he made to the game of cricket in Uganda.

The event was attended by Walusimbi’s family, former Cricket players and coaches, Administrators from the various sectors and the members of the fourth estate.

“We started this last year when we made a birthday celebration for Mr Abbey Lutaya and it was a success. So we decided that every year we will honour legends, everyone who has contributed to this sport. We also honoured Sam Ssewagudde last year as well,” Paul Kaheru, the UCA Board member said.

“So, this year as UCA and our few friends of this game, we have decided to honour Walusimbi for his great contribution to the game in Uganda as a player, coach and an administration”

Walusimbi captained and coached the Cricket Cranes and was one of the two Ugandans who represented East African at the 1975 World Cup.

After he returned from World Cup, he played a great part in spreading the game of cricket in school across the pearl of Africa.

The prestigious occasion was capped off by a star studded game played between Samji’s XI and Walu’s XI for which Samji’s XI won by 41 runs. Speeches followed afterwards from various stakeholder to celebrate the life of the legendary pace bowler.
