The two-time champions of DR Congo rallied from a goal down to score a late equalizer against Libya in their 1-all draw in the second group B game that ensured they maintain the lead with four points. The game was played at Japoma Stadium in Douala.
DR Congo dominated the game against Libya but succumbed to an early goal as earlier as the 5th minute when the Libyan captain Muetaz Husayn headed home connecting from a well taken Al Shadi corner.
The Congolese pressed high for an early equalizer but they couldn’t penetrate through an organized Libya defence and which forced them to try and find a way from a distance.
In the 22nd minute of the game Libya earned a scoring opportunity from a counter-attack off a poor corner by the Congolese but their captain Muetaz Husayn was denied by goalkeeper Nathan Tshumu who made a brilliant save from just outside the 18yards area.
The Congolese continued to dominate the game and they almost found the back of the net in the 41st minute of the game, but midfielder Amede Masasi failed to convert from close range as his effort hit the post before being cleared out of danger by the Libyan defence to end the first half in a 1-0 lead.
The second stanza was all for DR Congo to dominate as the Libyans returned with a rather shoddy plan marred by a lot of time-wasting which paid off in the early minutes. However, they couldn’t hold on as the Congolese bagged a late equalizer in the 90th minute a goal scored by Amede Masasi to secure a point in 1-1 draw.
The other game in group B between Congo Brazzaville and Niger also ended in a 1-all draw. Mouandza Mapata scored in the 35th minute to put Congo Brazzaville ahead, but Niger bagged an equalizer from a well-taken penalty by Moussa in 70th minute as they shared the points.
DR Congo who won their first game against Congo Brazzaville maintain the lead with four points from two games. Libya and Niger are both on two points while Congo Brazzaville trail with just a single point from the two games played.
The Games continue tonight with games in Group C with Morocco playing against Rwanda in the early kick-off while Uganda takes on Congo in the second game.
