At the team welcome lunch organized by the Uganda Cricket Association, Brian Masaba, the captain of the Cricket Cranes, made a surprising announcement: he is retiring from his T20 career and T20 Captaincy.
Masaba, who led the Cricket Cranes at the T20 World Cup in the West Indies, played a crucial role in all four of Uganda’s matches.
He made history as the first Ugandan player to take a wicket at the World Cup, achieving this milestone against Afghanistan.
Serving as team captain for the past five years during his second tenure, Masaba will be remembered for guiding Uganda to their first-ever World Cup appearance.
His leadership has been instrumental in the team’s success, and his decision to retire comes at a time when the team is still celebrating their participation in the prestigious tournament.
Potential candidates to succeed Masaba include current vice-captain Riazat Ali Shah and Kenneth Waiswa, who served as deputy during the T20 Qualifiers in Zimbabwe in 2022.
As Masaba steps down, he leaves the team in a strong position, ready to build on their recent achievements.
