It will a repeat of the 2017 African Cup of Nations quarterfinal has Egypt takes on Morocco at the same stage of this year’s tournament in Cameroon.

A place in the semi-finals is at stake for both teams on Sunday evening in this one.

Morocco came from one goal down against Malawi to advance to the quarter-finals. Youssef En-Nesyri equalised for Morocco on the stroke of half-time after Gabadinho Mhango had put Malawi ahead with a wondergoal from 40 yards. PSG right-back Achraf Hakimi scored a superb free-kick to give Morocco a crucial win.

Egypt on the other hand have the experience at this stage of the competition. They are seven-time AFCON champions, the most successful team in the history of the tournament. Egypt haven’t won the tournament since 2010, however if they can get past Morocco, and with Salah in their side, they will fancy their chances of lifting the cup for the first time in over a decade.

In the previous six games between the two sides, Morocco has won three games, Egypt won two and one draw. But Egypt won each of their last four quarterfinal matches having progressed in just one of their previous five such games in the competition.

For Morocco, they have won six of their last eight games at the AFCON scoring in every game in this run. They are looking to reach the semi’s for the first time since 2004.

The victor between Egypt and Morocco will face hosts, Cameroon in the semis on 3rd February at the Paul Biya Stadium, Olembé.

In terms of the team news, Egypt will be without goalkeeper El Shenawy who picked up a hamstring strain in their last match against Ivory Coast, so Zamalek shot-stopper Mohammed Abou-Gabal Gabaski will start in goal.

While also Al Ahly defender Akram Tawfik will not take part in the remainder of this tournament, having torn his anterior cruciate ligament in the opening match against Nigeria.

For Vahid Halilhodzic’s Morocco, there have no major injury concerns as all players are available for selection.
