AFCON 2021: Trezeguet sends the Pharaohs into semis

0

Mohammad Trezeguet came off and netted the winning goal in extra time as Egypt came from behind at Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium, Yaoundé to defeat Morocco 2-1 and progress to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.

Trezeguet netted in the 100 minute of the game after the game was forced into extra time after a 1-all stalemate at the end of the 90.

Mohammad Salah had netted in the second half to cancel out Sofiane Boufal’s early penalty for Morocco.

Boufal put Morocco ahead after Achraf Hakimi, who made a wonderful run was stripped by Ashraf Ayman in the forbidden area.

Salah levelled matters just after the break with a tap in after Morocco custodian Yassine Bounou spilled an Egyptian effort back into play.

In the 10th minute of Extra time, Salah set up the winner. The Liverpool forward just put the ball on a plate with a low cross for Trezeguet, who just tap in at the far post from close range.

Before that though, Egypt were forced to play their third-choice goalkeeper Mohamed Sobhi, who came on for his international debut after Gabaski hurt himself while tipping Nayef Aguerd’s header on to the bar near the end of normal time.

Without that save there would have been no semi-final to worry about and Salah would have been on the next flight back to England.

The man of the moment for the Pharaohs, Salah has been involved in 64% of Egypt’s goals at the Africa Cup of Nations – nine of 14 – since he made his competition debut in 2017.

Egypt should have scored a third right at the end after Morocco keeper Bounou came up for a free-kick. Morocco played it short but Egypt made a mess of their counter-attack as Salah shot into the side-netting with just a goal to beat.

Egypt now proceed to the semi-finals where they will face hosts, Cameroon.
