2024 Elgon Cup: Rugby Cranes suffer Narrow defeat in first leg

Kenya’s Simbas defeated Uganda Rugby Cranes in the first leg of this year’s Elgon Cup by 27:25 at the RFUEA grounds ‘Ngong Road’ on Saturday evening .

The hosts had a flying start with Griffin Chao opening the score going on to convert a try six minutes into the game passing on the stick to Jeanson Misoga for another  four minutes later.

With Uganda, their first try came after the half hour mark through Pius Ogena and Innocent Gwokto respectively.

Gwokto managed two try in a very shortly period of time to his name with both conversions being given to Shakim Ssembusi who did justice to his ability going on to take the Cranes upfront by two (12:14)

Getting into the second half, Uganda extended their lead immediately after restart with another a converted try but Kenya  revived their lead through a Brian Wahinya brace tries to make it (24:17)

In the 66th minute, debutand Robin Odrua gave Uganda it’s fourth try of the game but Shakim Ssembusi failed to convert something that brought worry to Ugandan who saw their lead slip away.

Minutes later veteran John Kubu’s penalty extended Kenya’s lead to 27:22.

The Cranes had a chance to pick a win from Nairobi but a Yasin Waswa missed penalty in the last moments of the game and buried their hopes.

This year’s ultimate Elgon cup winner will be decided in the return leg which will be played on next Saturday on November 6th at the King’s park arena in Bweyogerere.
