Maroons Vs Vipers SC – Luzira

Vipers SC make the short trip to Luzira Prisons Grounds on a mission — to collect maximum points and tighten their stranglehold on the Startimes Uganda Premier League title race.

With just six games left in the season, every fixture has the weight of a final, and Friday’s clash against Maroons FC is no different.

Fresh from a hard-earned 1-0 victory over SC Villa in the Uganda Cup quarterfinals, a match decided by midfielder Milton Karisa’s decisive goal see’s the Venoms are in high spirits and full of belief. That win not only booked them a place in the semifinals but also boosted morale ahead of a crunch run-in.

Vipers currently sit atop the league standings with 56 points from 24 matches, five ahead of second-placed NEC FC. A win in Luzira would further consolidate their lead and bring them a step closer to reclaiming the title.

Their recent league form has been equally impressive. In their last outing, Vipers displayed class and conviction, brushing aside closest challengers NEC FC 3-1 in a statement performance. That victory, combined with the momentum from their cup run, makes them a formidable opponent.

However, Maroons FC are no pushovers especially on home turf. Known for their compact style and defensive resilience, the Prison Warders will be eager to bounce back from a narrow 2-1 defeat to UPDF FC. Currently 8th on the log with 34 points, Maroons will be buoyed by the return of key players Derrick Basoga and striker Raymond Walugembe, both of whom missed the Bombo trip.

The reverse fixture in Kitende earlier this season saw Vipers edge a tight contest 1-0, thanks to a strike from Moses Waiswa. But history suggests Luzira is rarely a comfortable hunting ground for title-chasing teams.

Vipers assistant coach Fred Muhumuza is taking nothing for granted ahead of the trip. “We respect Maroons. They’ve always been a tricky side, especially at home,” he said.

“But our job is to stay focused, control what we can, and play our football. This is another opportunity for the boys to show character, maturity, and hunger.”

Captain Milton Karisa echoed similar sentiments, cautioning against complacency. “It’s going to be a tough game. We didn’t beat them at their home last season, so we know what to expect,” said the forward.

“Everyone is pumped up after the Villa win. That result gave us belief and showed what we’re capable of. Now we need to stay focused, stick to our plan, and thrive on our bond.”

With the finish line drawing closer and the title in sight, Vipers SC understand the magnitude of every point. Luzira will test their resolve, but with form, focus, and momentum on their side, the Venoms will back themselves to deliver — one step at a time.
