The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) draw has sparked excitement across the continent, and for Uganda, it’s a mixed bag of challenges and opportunities.

Uganda have been placed in Group C alongside some formidable teams: three-time champions Nigeria, 17-time qualifiers Tunisia, and their East African neighbors Tanzania.

The tournament, scheduled to take place in Morocco in December 2025, promises to be a thrilling competition, and Uganda’s path to success will certainly be a tough one.

The Draw Ceremony

The highly anticipated draw ceremony took place on Monday at the Mohammed V National Theatre in Rabat, Morocco, and was a spectacular event hosted by actor Djimon Hounsou and TV presenter Nabila Kilani.

Football legends including Morocco’s Mustapha Hadji, 2023 AFCON champion Serge Aurier of Ivory Coast, 2021 AFCON-winning coach Aliou Cissé, and 2013 AFCON winner Joseph Yobo were entrusted with selecting the groups.

Their efforts, along with the guidance of CAF’s Director of Tournaments, Samson Amadu, set the stage for what promised to be a captivating competition.

Uganda’s Group C Challenge

Uganda’s entry into Group C presents both a challenging and thrilling journey. Nigeria, a three-time AFCON winner and one of Africa’s most successful football nations, will undoubtedly be a tough opponent.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

The Super Eagles have a rich footballing history and are always one of the top favorites in any tournament.

Their ability to showcase attacking flair and solid defense means that Uganda will have to be at their best to make an impact.

Alongside Nigeria, Tunisia stands as another powerhouse in African football.

With 17 AFCON appearances under their belt and a consistent record of strong performances in the tournament, Tunisia remains one of the continent’s elite teams.

Their disciplined and strategic approach to the game will provide Uganda with yet another challenge as they aim to rise to the occasion. But it’s not all doom and gloom for the Cranes.

They will also face their East African counterparts, Tanzania, who have made strides in African football in recent years.

Tanzania’s squad, though not as historically decorated as Nigeria or Tunisia, is full of energy and ambition.

The Road to AFCON Glory

Uganda’s journey in Group C will require both resilience and tactical excellence.

With the competition heating up, every match will be a test of their strength and determination.

The Cranes will need to capitalize on their strengths, such as their tight-knit team dynamics and disciplined defense, while also finding ways to break down the formidable defenses of Nigeria and Tunisia.

The match against Tanzania will be particularly exciting, with both teams eager to prove themselves on the continental stage.

This regional rivalry will no doubt bring out the best in both sides, and football fans across East Africa will be eagerly watching.

The Broader AFCON Picture While Group C is undoubtedly tough for Uganda, it’s just one part of the larger tournament picture.

In other groups, teams like 2021 winners Senegal, seven-time winners – Egypt, and defending Champions Cote D’Ivoire will also be vying for the crown, each bringing their own unique brand of football to the table.

But for Uganda, the focus will be on navigating this tough group and securing qualification to the knockout stages just like they did in 2019.

With the tournament set to unfold in Morocco’s vibrant cities in December 2025, the Cranes will have the chance to showcase their talent to the world.

Whether they can rise above the challenges of Nigeria, Tunisia, and Tanzania will depend on their preparation, determination, and teamwork.
