- Uganda Martyrs 2-0 Bugema
On a lively Tuesday evening in Nkozi, Uganda Martyrs University showed grit, patience and class to earn a vital 2-0 first-leg win over Bugema University in the University Football League semi finals.
The Saints may have left it late, but their second-half breakthrough delivered by Tumusiime Emmanuel and Lagu Richard has placed them in a commanding position heading into the return leg next week in Bugema.
From the opening whistle, it was clear the hosts had come out with intent. Just 10 minutes in, forward Kidega Godfrey found himself with a golden opportunity to put the Saints ahead, but his close-range strike drifted just wide. The near-miss was followed by another just five minutes later, as Kidega again threatened to breach the Hornets’ defense but failed to hit the target.
Despite Uganda Martyrs’ dominance in possession and territory, Bugema stood tall throughout the first half. The visitors absorbed wave after wave of pressure, with defender Kagoda Charles making a crucial interception to cut out a dangerous Agamile Ivan cross bound for Jjonga Nicholas. Goalkeeper Kalungi Ronald was also alert, diving low to his left to deny Kidega in what proved to be the last big chance before the break.
Goalless at halftime, the Saints regrouped and returned with sharper urgency and it paid off just six minutes into the second half. Tumusiime Emmanuel unleashed a long-range effort that beat Kalungi and sent the home crowd into raptures.
The goal injected confidence into the hosts, who continued to probe. Lagu Richard came close shortly after the hour mark, narrowly missing the target following a well-weighted pass from Kayondo.
Bugema, to their credit, continued to fight, holding their defensive shape under increasing pressure. But the Saints kept pushing, and with five minutes to play, their persistence paid off again. Lagu, this time with better precision, doubled the lead after another dangerous build-up cementing a well-earned advantage for Uganda Martyrs ahead of the return leg.
With a two goal cushion, UMU now head to Bugema on April 15th with momentum firmly on their side as they chase a semifinal spot.
As the University Football League heats up, attention briefly shifts to Kavule on April 10th, where SLAU holding a narrow edge, will battle IUIU in another crucial second-leg tie.
