Uganda end their CHAN Qualifier preparations with defeat to Zanzibar

Uganda Cranes have ended their CHAN Qualifier preparations with a defeat to Zanzibar in a friendly game played at Amaan Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Uganda lost 1-0 to Zanzibar courtsey of Ali Ibrahim Mkoko  second half strike.

Before this game, the Uganda National Football team had earlier played two friendly games with Ethiopia in Adama, where they lost one and drew the other. All these games were held to prepare Uganda for the CHAN qualifier game against Tanzania which will be played this weekend.

To the game against Zanzibar, Uganda had a couple of chances to score and go ahead but wasted them.

In the opening half, Hakim Kiwanuka had his shot saved by the goalkeeper Ali Ahmed in the 21st minute before leftback Derrick Ndahiro placed the ball wide after a nice cross by James Begisa few moments afterwards.

While Saidi Kyeyune rattled the bottom post after collecting ball from Kiwanuka to shield off his opponent and shot.

In the second half, Rogers Mato (who had come on for Isma Mugulusi at halftime) put his effort just inches wide while Richard Basangwa failed to beat Ahmed after being let through by Mato.

Zanzibar scored from their first realistic attempt at goal which came in the 77th minutes when Mkoko  slotted home past Mathia Muwagga.

Uganda finished the game a player less after Rogers Mato was sent off by Center Referee Nasir Salum with three minutes left on the clock.

Uganda now head to Tanzania for their 2023 CHAN Qualifier game having not won any of their preparation games.

The first leg of the qualifiers will played on 28th August at Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Tanzania while the second leg will be played at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on 3rd August.

The aggregate winner between Uganda and Tanzania will qualify to the final tournament slated for January, 2023 in Algeria.
