Uganda Boxing Champions League: Murungi edges Mubiru in controversial fight

It was all action at Club Obligato as rising boxer Khasim Murungi beat experienced fighter Derrick Mubiru in a controversial fight in the week 10 main fight of the Uganda Boxing Champions League on Saturday evening.

The event was graced by Uganda Boxing Federation President Moses Muhangi, top stylist Abryanz collections and artiste Grenade Official.


Into the ring, Senior four student at City High School who had recently defeated 2022 Africa bronze medalist Jonah Kyobe in week 8 was not at his best as he failed on his movements in the ring and a number of his strength despite starting well in Round one.

But he came back in the end (5th round) and threw a flood of rear counters, jabs and straights after Derrick had clearly thrown a number of clear punches to top the last three rounds. 

After the fight, there was loud noise crowd for Mubiru who was stationed in the blue corner, winding his fans to make some more noise but to his dismay was so disappointed after the judges gave the fight to Murungi in the red corner.

A unhappy Mubiru stood out in disbelief going on to output his thought his dissatisfaction while holding the NBS Sport microphone phone saying, “Dear Judges, we put in hard work to achieve this” but was later on taken off the stage by his good friend Matovu Ukasha.


The calm East Coast boxer Murungi who is slowly writing his name in bold in the Elite Featherweight category clinched the fight on a unknown 4:3 score by seven judges.

This came about in a way that two individuals were added to the crew( an evaluator and observer) to make 7 Judges as it was in Cameroon during the Africa Elite boxing championship meaning that in this fight there was a fight review and that changed pronounced results to 4:3.

Away from the main fight, there were other fights, which featured three ladies match ups where Nadia Najemba emerged victorious by 5-0 against seasoned boxer Jalia Nali right after her maternity period, Esther Namirimu (Kyengera) won 5-0 against Nancy Kwiocwiny (Katabi) in Light weight women. 

Just like Esther, Scovia Muzira (Lukanga) also won 5-0 against Sharifah Nanyonjo (Zebra) in light middle women.

In the men, Ochan Samuel (KCCA) won against Trevor Mudenya (East coast) in the Bantam weight by 5-0 unanimous decision 

For Sadat Kilwana (Zebra), he beat Mustafa Sempijja (Katwe) in Round 4 with Referee stopping Contest after Sempijja was outclassed in the light heavy weight.

The same happened in the Juniors pin weight as Ali Nsubuga was announced winner in round 2 after Referee Stopped the contest after he had outclassed Twaubu Kayanja.

Brian Nkurunziza (Kololo) won 5-0 against Hakim Lubega (Zebra) in Bantam weing youth as Bernard Ochieng (Sparks) ‘s fight against Ashraf Galabuzi in Light Bantam juniors was so close ending in 3-2 scoreline.

The Uganda Boxing Champions League week 11 will return on Saturday 23rd September 2023.
