Tanzania kicked off their CHAN 2024 campaign in style with a commanding 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso in a Group B clash at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
Before a sold-out crowd under the lights, Abdul Hamisi Suleiman converted a penalty just before halftime to send fans into wild celebrations. The Azam FC forward showed composure to break the deadlock in the 45th minute.
In the 70th minute, Mohamed Hussein Mohamed doubled the lead with a powerful header. Initially disallowed, the goal was later confirmed following a VAR review.
The result puts Tanzania at the top of Group B, which also features Central African Republic, Madagascar, Mauritania, and Burkina Faso.
The second Group B fixture between Mauritania and Madagascar is set for Sunday.
Meanwhile, action shifts to Kenya for Group A ties. DR Congo face Zambia in the early kickoff, before hosts Kenya battle Angola under the floodlights.
CHAN 2024, dubbed PAMOJA 2024, is jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania from August 2 to 30. The tournament is exclusive to players competing in their respective domestic leagues.
