The StarTimes Uganda Premier League continues on Friday and at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende as we witness a top of the table clash with defending champions, Vipers SC hosting highly firing Police FC.
After seven Matchdays, Police FC sit top of the StarTimes UPL log with 16 points so far, just one ahead of Vipers who are still unbeaten in second.
Coming into this game, the leaders Police FC defeated BUL FC 2-0 at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo to claim their 5th win of the season while Vipers SC had to come twice from behind to secure a 2-all draw away at Kyetume at the FUFA Technical Center, Njeru.
Coach Abdullah Mubiru whose side has not beaten Vipers since 2017 believes his charges can outcompete the Venoms’ in their backyard.
“Much as we know we are playing against the champions, we respect them, they’re a very good team, very good players, very good technical team and financially they’re well off, what really matters is the way we are going to handle ourselves on the pitch,” Mubiru stated before adding;
“Who wouldn’t feel proud to outcompete the champions? We are looking forward to out-competing them.”
As for Fred Kajoba, whose side is currently having the most goals this season says he will approach this game differently because he believes Police is a very good side.
“We play a side that’s credible, thus, I demand hard work, responsibility and positivity from whoever will be put on the pitch on Friday,” Kajoba noted in his press match presser.
Team news
Fred Kajoba will be bolstered by the return of winger Milton Kalisa who returned to training this week after overcoming a thigh injury he sustained with the Uganda Cranes in Cameroon. But, former Onduparaka defender, Rashid Toha, remains out with a muscular injury he suffered during Tuesday’s draw with Kyetume.
Siraje Sentamu is also fit to start against the Cops, having been rested against Kyetume on Tuesday.
For Abdullah Mubiru, He will still be without club’s last season’s topscorer Ben Ocen, Frank Tumwesigye, Bashir Kabuye, Edward Kiryowa and Samuel Kayongo who are all still out with injuries.
Victory for Vipers tomorrow would take top with 18 points, surpassing the Cops by two points. However, if the Cops avoid defeat, they will remain top of the log.
Vipers and Police have met 21 times since 2010 with the Venoms winning a wholesome of them (13) while Police has only won four times. The other four have ended in draws.
