StarTimes UPL: Ssenkaaba inspires the Red Eagles past Jogoos


Former Kitara FC striker, George Ssenkaaba’s second half goal was enough to inspire Express FC past SC Villa in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League Kampala derby played at the Muteesa II Stadium,  Wakulukuku on Saturday evening.

The hosts, Express welcomed back skipper Enock Walusimbi in the starting lineup after serving his three-match suspension, while also the Jogoos also made one change to their starting lineup, with Saidi Keni replacing Meddie Kibirige in goal.

The best scoring chance in the first half was in the 16th minute when Godfrey Lwesibawa was fouled on the left wing by Emmanuel Wasswa. Arthur Kiggundu took the resulting freekick superbly to Eric Kabaale, but the forward’s header kissed the crossbar and went out.

The game went into the first half break with scores barren with neither side finding the back of the net.

In the second half, Wasswa Bbosa introduced Frank Ssenyondo the for injured Godfrey Lwesibawa  and in the 47th minute, the Red Eagles took the lead through George Ssenkaaba who received a high ball from Frank Kalanda and curled it past Keni from the left.

It was after this moment that Villa made their first changes of the game, bringing on Benson Muhindo and Abdullah Salim for Ronald Ssekiganda and Goffin Oyirwoth respectively in a space of just four minutes to try and come back in the game, but the pair were unable to cause any sizeable threat to the Red Eagles back-line.

Villa had a chance to level matters later on but Mathias Muwanga was spot on to save Isaac Ogwang’s header.

Today’s win is Express FC’s first against SC Villa in three years, with their last victory having come in 2017.

The Red Eagles head into the break unbeaten, having garnered 8 points in their opening four games, while the Jogoos have now suffered a second league loss of the season.
