Oscar Mawa: youngster flies Cubs to the 2021 AFCON U17 finals

Oscar Mawa, U17 AFCON/CECAFA Zonal qualifiers - Uganda beats Djibouti

Osar Mawa’s late goal against Djibouti in the semi-finals of the CECAFA U17 Zonal Qualifiers in Rwanda was all that the Uganda’s U17 Boys, the Cubs, needed to qualify for the 2021 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations in Morocco.

With just two minutes to the death of the game, the KCCA JT forward calmly placed the ball into the back of the net to help the Cubs advance to the AFCON finals, as well as to final of the Zonal competition, where they will face either Ethiopia or Tanzania who play in the other semis later today.

The goal was Mawa’s sixth in the competition which comes after a hat-trick he registered in Uganda’s 5-0 humbling of Kenya, before netting a brace versus Ethiopia in the final group game on Friday.

Having knocked Djibouti off their perch to qualify for the AFCON U-17 championship due in Morocco next year, Hamza Lutalo’s side will keep their focus on the CECAFA tournament, in the hope that they return home with the double delight of AFCON qualification and the zonal title.
