After five game since he was appointed to replace Wasswa Bbosa, interim head coach James Odoch have finally secured his first league victory.
This is after his charges overcame Police FC 2-1 at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium, Wakulukuku on Tuesday.
They had to fight from one down to secure maximum points. Tom Mawejje put Police ahead early on in game, but George Senkaaba levelled matters for Express just before the break before Express got the second in the closing half courtesy of George Kiryowa’s own goal.
The visitors. Police FC were forced into an early change as goalkeeper Abdul Kimera injured his shoulder after a collision with Ssenkaaba in the first minute of the game. He was replaced by Tom Ikara.
With 10 minutes played, Police took the lead courtesy of Tom Mawejje’s strike that emerged after good interplay between the Cop’s skipper and Juma Balinya.
The Red Eagles first realistic attempt at goal came in the 19th minute when Enock Ssebagala rattled the crossbar after being exquisitely set-up by Isaa Lumu.
At half-hour, Mawejje almost made it two for the Cops but he was denied by Denis Otim, the Express custodian.
At the other end, Express almost got level but Eric Kambale failed to beat Tom Ikara from point-blank range after a wonderful cross by Sebaggala.
At the stroke of halftime, Express drew level as Senkaaba rose high to head in a well driven Sadiq Ssekyembe cornerkick.
At the restart, the hosts, Express head coach James Odoch introduced on Charles Musiige for Daniel Shabene, but it was the Cops who got first chance of the half, but Mawejje’s sublime shot went just few inches wide.
Just before the hour mark, Express got ahead through George Kiryowa’s own goal after a ball bounced onto the defender’s body into the back of the net. Ivan Mayanja had rattled the crossbar in the buildup to that own goal.
Few moments later, it was almost 2-2 but Johnson Odong shot from outside the box went just wide with Otim left starstruck in the Express goal.
In the later exchanges of the game, Police tried as much as possible to level matters but the Red Eagles stood tight at the back to secure the much needed victory.
The result means Express garner their first maximum points in six games and now move to 36 points in 23 games.
For Police, they drop to 10th on the 16-team log with 24 points.
