John Byamukama netted the lone goal at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Friday evening as Express FC handed Vipers SC its first home loss this season.
Byamukama’s goal came midway in the second half to propel Express FC to their first win over the Venoms since 2016.
The Red Eagles started the game on a high foot and within five minutes, they came close to finding an early opener but Godfrey Lwesibawa failed to find the back of the net after he was put through for a one on one with Bashir Sekagya by Charles Musiige.
Vipers then grew into the game and fashioned their first goalscoring chance in the 28th minute when Paul Mucureezi rose high to head in a Disan Galiwango cornerkick, but the forward’s effort went wide just above the crossbar.
From then on, the Venoms continued to impose a lot of relentless pressure on the Red Eagle’s backline and almost got the breakthrough just before the break but Karim Watambala’s shot flew closely over the crossbar.
The second half came along with a lively start, with Vipers having decent chances in the first 10 minutes. First, Yunus Sentamu tried from a freekick but couldn’t beat the Express’s wall. He again broke through again but blazed his effort just above the crossbar.
But from what was their first shot at goal in the second half, Express FC got ahead after a moment of pure brilliance from John Byamukama. From just outside the penalty area, he received the ball from Martin Kizza and unleashed an audacious shot that went straight into the top right corner past a helpless Sekagya to give the visitors the lead.
It was a moment of pure quality to give the former Tooro United midfielder his first league goal of the season.
Just a few moments later, Watambala was unlucky not to put the Venoms level when his teasing shot rattled the upright with Mathias Muwaagalooking on. Watambala came close away a few minutes later but he once again curled his strike just wide.
However, despite the Venoms attacking more in the closing minutes, they couldn’t find the much-needed equaliser through an Express FC backline.
The result sees Vipers lose their first home game this season and tentatively stay joint top of the log with 43 points, three above Express FC who now move to 40 points.
In their next fixtures, Vipers travel to Tororo to face MYDA while Express will be at home against Onduparaka.
The other game ended in a 3-2 win for Kyetume over Wakiso Giants at the Nakisunga playground.
