Stanbic Uganda Cup: Villa, Vipers set for epic second leg clash

0

After a week, SC Villa and Vipers SC will once again meet in the Uganda Cup for their second leg of the quarterfinal tie on Wednesday at the Bombo Military Playgrounds.

The Jogoos head into this contest full of confidence as they grabbed a late away goal when the two side drew 1-all at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende in the first leg.

Ronald Ssekiganda netted a late equaliser that cancelled out Lawrence Tezikya’s headed in the 80th minute.

Meanwhile, Vipers head into this game without Fred Kajoba who resigned from his role as head coach on Monday evening to leave his assistant Paul Kiwanuka in charge for the remainder of season.

The Jogoos have also had their own share of troubles following a row between the team management and captain Asuman Harishe over none payment.

However, they head into this tie with an advantage as they just need to restrict Vipers from scoring against them in order to progress to the last four of the tournament. The Venoms need atleast any form of victory or a 2 plus-all draw to advance to the Semis.

The Jogoos are seeking for their 10th title while the Venoms are bidding to win their second trophy after they won their first and only trophy in 2016 when they beat Onduparaka.

The last time the two sides met in the Uganda Cup two-legged tie, Vipers emerged victors, defeating the Jogoos 1-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals to progress to the finals where they faced KCCA at the Emokori Playgrounds, Bukedea.

This will be the fourth meeting between Villa and Vipers, who are unbeaten, winning two of them in the league.

Vipers head into this game with no major injury issue save for Bashir Asiku and Mohammed Shaban who are still suspended by the club due to indiscipline.

For Villa, they will be without Goffin Oyirworth and Benson Muhindo, who are still out the injuries while Said Keni and Emmanuel Wasswa are expected to be back into the Matchday squad after their exploits with the Sand Cranes in Senegal.

What the coaches said in the pre-match conferences

“We played very well in the first leg and lucky enough, we got an important away goal so our strategy tomorrow is defend well and restrict Vipers from finding the back of our net as we know a goalless scoreline takes us to the next round,” SC Villa head coach Edward Kaziba said.

“It’s not going to be an easy game judging on the result of the first leg and we are going to Bombo aware that we need to score to win the game and progress to the next round.”

“The players are motivated as they know what it means to play and win against Villa especially after our first leg statemate so they are ready to score goals and help us get that much needed win to qualify,” Vipers interim head coach Paul Kiwanuka said.
