Standbic Black Pirates have been crowned champions of the Uganda Rugby league following today’s 44:23 win against Jinja Hippos at the Kings Park Arena in Bweyogerere.
Pirates opened the score with a William Nkore Penalty but Hippos were more clinical and had two converted tries to set up a 13:14 halftime lead.
Second half substitute Ivan Magomu almost secured victory with less than three minutes, but failed to convert on his own try, keeping the game level on 23:23 and sent the us into extra time.
Pirates ran riot, scoring three converted tries to send a fully packed Arena into wide celebrations. Despite not winning the championship, Hippos walk back across the Nile with heads high.
Having finished third in regular season, eliminating twelve time Champions KOBs on their way to their first final. For pirates, they continue to write their name amongst the nation’s best, adding to their 2018 and 2023 championships.
