St. Lawrence University (SLAU) climbed to the top of Group C in the University Football League after securing a 3-1 victory over YMCA Institute at Kavule on Wednesday evening.

This win revenged their earlier 2-0 loss to YMCA in Buwambo.

Ziraba Ronnie, Innocent Matege, and Mugerwa Lawrence were on target for SLAU, while David Ochwo netted the consolation goal for the visitors.

The hosts started strong, with Kalanda setting up Matege in the 10th minute, but the YMCA goalkeeper reacted quickly to deny him.

However, eight minutes later, Ziraba Ronnie broke the deadlock, capitalizing on a Kalanda through ball during a counterattack.

SLAU continued to press, with Matege’s powerful shot being blocked by Chadiga just before the half-hour mark.

YMCA had a chance to equalize, but some resolute defending and an excellent double save from Kateete kept them at bay.

Seven minutes to halftime, Ziraba went down in the box, but the referee waved off any penalty claims.

Kaganzi Barton then attempted a shot towards the bottom corner, but Kateete ensured SLAU maintained their lead heading into the break.

Two minutes into the second half, Innocent Matege doubled SLAU’s advantage. YMCA attempted to respond, but SLAU’s defense stood firm.

Five minutes before the hour mark, Ziraba set up Ssentongo, but Chadiga intercepted the danger.

YMCA finally found a breakthrough in the 64th minute when David Ochwo converted a Lugyya Ashiraf cross to pull one back for the visitors.

Despite their efforts to find an equalizer, SLAU remained solid. Miraje and Lugyya both came close, but Kateete’s goalkeeping brilliance denied them.

As the game approached full-time, SLAU sealed the win in the 90th minute when Mugerwa Lawrence rose highest to head in a Matege Innocent corner, restoring the two-goal cushion.

With this result, SLAU moves to the top of Group C with seven points from four games, two ahead of YMCA, who now sit in second place.

The University Football League continues on Thursday, February 13, as Kampala University hosts Gulu at the Luzira Prison Grounds.
