NBL: UCU Canons survive relegation, grab playoff place

It was Do or die action on Wednesday evening as Uganda Christian University mens basketball team( UCU Canons) won their clash by 10 baskets over KCCA Panthers in the National Basketball League at YMCA- Wadegeya to storm the playoffs finals.

UCU won with a score line of 79-69 inorder to climb to 7th and push last year’s survivors UPDF Tomahawks to join newcomers Rezlife Saints as the two relegated sides from NBL.

Into the game, KCCA got on to the top in the first quarter by three baskets (27-24) despite the noise from UCU students at the YMCA ground.

In the second quarter, the Mukono based side fought so hard with full focus on their survival chance to come back, putting up 23 points to lead 47-41 as they went into halftime.

In the third, UCU affirmed their primary goal which was to win, stretching their lead to 72-54 with an intention of reducing on the unexpected pressure in the fourth.

Despite being at the loosing end in the fourth quarter, KCCA, with a high spirit were always going to put up a fight to avoid humiliation raising 15 to cut the point gap to make it look like the game would tie but only to be defeated by 10 baskets in the end with a 79-69 score.

Right after the game, the UCU fans who came in huge numbers flogged the court inorder to celebrate and congratulate their players upon survival.

When we go by the numbers on the day, UCU’s Peter Sifuma was the player of the day completing a double – double( both points and rebounds)of 20 points.

As we await for the official National Basketball League Playoffs Matchups, let’s note that Kampala Rockets who finished 9th will be in the playoffs since Namuwongo Blazers quit despite being in good position.
