Former UCU Lady Canons star Tracy Namugosa produced a game high 23 points against her old club, but KCCA Leopards still opened their National Basketball League semifinal campaign with a 79-71 defeat to UCU Lady Canons at Lugogo Indoor Arena on Wednesday.
The victory handed UCU a 1-0 lead in the best of five playoff series.
KCCA made the stronger start, racing to a 7-0 lead before Sylivia Nantongo got UCU on the board with an easy layup.
The Lady Canons quickly settled into the contest, overturning the deficit to lead 23-20 at the end of the first quarter.
UCU took control in the second period, moving the ball with confidence and finding their shooting rhythm.
Igiraneza Christa Ciella beat the halftime buzzer with a three-pointer to give the Lady Canons a comfortable 45-35 lead.
The momentum continued after the break as UCU stretched the gap to 16 points, carrying a 66-50 advantage into the final quarter.
The Leopards refused to give in. Namugosa and Ninette Uwineza knocked down early three pointers to spark a late rally, but UCU stayed composed in the closing minutes to secure the opening win.
Sylivia Nakituka led the Lady Canons with 21 points, Sylivia Nantongo added 20, and Zoe Atek scored 11.
Namugosa’s 23 points were the best of the night for KCCA, while Angella Zainah Lokwameri contributed 13 and Sherinah Mwenyango added 10.
