Two-time champions Morocco have become the first national team to arrive in Kenya ahead of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024, scheduled to kick off on August 2, 2025, across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Their early arrival signals strong intent as they chase a historic third CHAN crown.
Touching down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi at approximately 4:00 am local time, Morocco received a vibrant reception complete with traditional dancers and music. Defender Marouane Louadni, one of only two players speaking to the press, shared the team’s enthusiasm:
“We are excited to be here and ready for CHAN. I already love Nairobi; the weather is great, and we are looking forward to a successful tournament.”
A Tough Group Draw Awaits
Morocco is placed in Group A, which includes hosts Kenya, Angola, Zambia, and fellow two-time champions DR Congo. Their campaign begins against Angola at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi on Sunday.
The Atlas Lions are one of only two nations to have won CHAN more than once, securing titles in 2018 (on Moroccan soil) and again in 2021 in Cameroon. Their dominance and early arrival make them strong favorites in Group A as they pursue an elusive third title.
Kenya’s South African coach, Benni McCarthy, is optimistic, noting that his Harambee Stars remain unbeaten in group stage history and that home support could be decisive:
“This is our time… we play at home, and we want to make a statement,” McCarthy asserted, reaffirming Kenya’s ambition to match continental giants despite a challenging group.
The Kenya vs. DR Congo match is set for August 3 at the Moi International Sports Centre (Kasarani Stadium), which seats over 55,000 spectators and will serve as a key CHAN venue.
After Morocco’s early touchdown, Zambia is expected to arrive on July 30, followed by Angola and DR Congo on July 31. CAF and local organising committees are coordinating arrivals, final registrations, and logistical briefs.
Morocco’s early arrival sets the tone for a championship filled with high competition and local energy.
