In a tournament filled with twists, Kings College Budo Cricket Club has pulled off one of the biggest surprises, securing a place in the Men’s UG20 quarterfinals.
Budo’s inclusion defied expectations, especially given the formidable opponents in Group A, which featured 50-over league champions Kutchi Tigers and last season’s T20 championship Champions, Tornado Bees.
Both teams were widely considered shoo-ins for the knockout stages, leaving little room for Budo to make a mark.
Despite the challenges, Budo navigated their group fixtures with a mix of resilience and fortune.
While they suffered defeats in both matches against Tornado Bees, Budo capitalized on wins over Nile Cricket Club, who have struggled throughout the season.
However, it was their unexpected walkover victories against Jinja SS and Kutchi Tigers that proved decisive, helping them finish second in the group with 12 points—just one point ahead of Tornado Bees, who were undone by an abandoned fixture against Nile.
Had Tornado Bees tied on points with Budo, their superior net run rate would have advanced them, but fate had other plans.
Joining Budo in the quarterfinals from Group A is Kutchi Tigers, who topped the group as expected.
Group B saw Tornado Cricket Club confirm their strength by defeating Wanderers in their final fixture, securing the top spot.
Despite their loss, Wanderers also advanced by finishing second.
In Group C, JACC’s strong form this year wasn’t enough to secure a quarterfinal berth, missing out as Rounders Cricket Club and Ceylon Lions advanced instead.
Group D told a similar story of heartbreak for some and triumph for others.
Mukono Warriors, the newcomers, ended their campaign winless at the bottom of the group.
Soroti City Cricket Club, who had earlier stunned Avengers, failed to repeat their success, allowing Nyakasura Cricket Club and Avengers Cricket Club to progress to the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinals will be played this Sunday, 8th September, with high-stakes single-elimination games across two venues.
At Entebbe Cricket Oval, Kutchi Tigers face Wanderers in the morning, followed by Ceylon Lions vs. Wanderers in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, at Jinja SS Oval, Budo will take on Tornado Cricket Club in the morning, with Rounders squaring off against Nyakasura in the afternoon.
