Uganda Premier League side Police FC have announced the appointment of seasoned tactician Matia Lule as their new head coach, following the sacking of Simon Peter Mugerwa. The managerial change comes in the wake of Police FC’s disappointing 3-1 loss to relegation-threatened Soltilo Bright Stars, which proved to be the final straw for Mugerwa.
Lule brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of Ugandan football to the Cops. His resume boasts an impressive track record, having previously coached the Uganda U17 national team (The Cubs) in 2014 and the Uganda Hippos (U20). On the club scene, he has taken charge of some of Uganda’s biggest sides, including KCCA FC, Express FC, Proline FC, and Entebbe FC.
Beyond Uganda’s borders, Lule has also made his mark in the Tanzanian Premier League, managing clubs such as Stand FC, Mbeya City, and Singida Big Stars. Until the end of last season, he served as the assistant coach at Ihefu SC, working alongside the late Fred Kajoba.
Lule’s national team experience extends to serving as the assistant coach for the Uganda Cranes during the tenure of Frenchman Sébastien Desabre, further underscoring his tactical acumen and leadership credentials.
According to reports from Swift Sports Uganda, Lule is expected to work closely with Steven Billy Kiggundu as part of the new-look technical bench at Police FC.
Currently sitting on 23 points in the Uganda Premier League, Police FC are striving to improve their league standing while also chasing silverware in the Stanbic Uganda Cup, where they have reached the quarterfinals. The club will be hoping Lule’s arrival sparks a turnaround in fortunes as they enter a crucial phase of the season.
