The Kabaka of Buganda Kingdom, His Highness Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II will grace the opening match of the 2020 Masaza Cup as defending champions, Bulemeezi take on Butambala at the FUFA Technical centre, Njeru.

Due to the covid 19 pandemic, this year’s Masaza Cup has been forced to kickoff at a later date and a change in the format as well, as teams and officials have to abide by the SOPs permitted by the Ministry of Health.

The tournament has changed from being played on a home and away basis in the group stages as before, to a single game against each team in the group.

The Masaza Cup defending champions of Bulemeezi who are in the Butikiro group alongside Butambala, Ssingo, Mawogola, and Buluuli all had covid 19 tests done on their officials and players as they entered into the camp in Njeru. Some players had positive results and were left out as a measure to protect the others.

Despite having some positive results from the tests, coach Simon Mugerwa is determined by defending the title right from the first game of the group stages.

“We are determined to defend our trophy from the word go, starting with the opening match against Butambala, the players will be given specific instructions to play their hearts out. Every match in the group stages will be like a cup final,” he said.

Bulemeezi defeated Busiro by a 1-0 margin at the Mandela national stadium when they won their second title.
