Madagascar and Mauritania opened their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaigns with a tense 0-0 draw at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Group B action.
Despite playing most of the match with ten men, Madagascar held firm against a Mauritanian side that struggled to capitalize on the numerical advantage.
The match began with promise from both teams, with Mauritania dominating early possession while Madagascar pressed effectively in midfield. Madagascar had the first clear opportunity when Rayan’s header narrowly missed the target in the 16th minute.
The game took a dramatic turn in the 40th minute when Madagascar captain Andriamirado Aro Hasina “Dax” was sent off by Ugandan Female referee Shamirah Nabadda after receiving a second yellow card, leaving the Barea to play with ten men for over 50 minutes.
Despite the disadvantage, the Malagasy side remained tactically disciplined and continued to trouble Mauritania on the counter.
Mauritania thought they had earned a penalty in the 30th minute after a suspected handball by Madagascar’s Rado, but VAR review overturned the decision. Later in the second half, Madagascar found the net on a rebound, only to be denied by the offside flag.
Substitutions from both sides aimed to inject life into the contest, with Mauritania introducing attacking options like Moulaye Ahmed Bessam, their captain and most experienced forward. However, despite late pressure and more possession, the Mourabitounes failed to break down Madagascar’s compact defense and the inspired goalkeeping of Michel.
This result leaves both teams with a point to start their Group B journey. Madagascar will take pride in the resilient performance, while Mauritania will view it as a missed opportunity to gain early control of the group.
Mauritania will next face tournament hosts Tanzania in a high-stakes encounter, while Madagascar will take on the Central African Republic in what promises to be another tactical battle
