Kitara FC were crowned champions of the 2025/26 Stanbic Uganda Cup after defeating SC Villa 2-1 in the final played at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru on Saturday.
The Royals came from behind to secure the victory, with an own goal from Missi Diego Ssemugera and a second-half strike from Jimmy Kalema proving decisive in a closely contested encounter played before a huge and passionate crowd.
SC Villa had taken the lead through an own goal by Kitara striker Patrick Henry Kaddu. However, the Royals responded before the break when Ssemugera inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, ensuring the two sides went into halftime level at 1-1.
After recess, Kitara continued to push forward and eventually found the winning goal through Jimmy Kalema, whose strike in the second half completed the comeback and handed the Hoima-based side another major trophy.
SC Villa searched for a way back into the game but Kitara held firm defensively to see out the victory and spark celebrations among their supporters.
The triumph marks Kitara’s second Uganda Cup title following their maiden success in the 2023/24 season when they defeated NEC FC in the final at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.
By winning the competition, Kitara also secured Uganda’s slot in the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup, returning to continental football for another campaign.
The Stanbic Uganda Cup individual awards were dominated by Kitara players following their successful campaign. Gadafi Wahab was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Best Midfielder, while Meddie Kibirige scooped the Best Goalkeeper accolade. George Senkaaba finished as the competition’s top scorer, while SC Villa captain David Owori was recognized as the tournament’s Best Defender.
For SC Villa, the defeat ended hopes of winning a record-extending 10th Uganda Cup crown despite an impressive run to the final.
