Uganda’s growing influence in continental sport received a major boost on Thursday, February 27, 2026, when Godwin Kayangwe was elected to the Executive Committee of Rugby Africa.
The milestone was achieved during the 17th General Assembly of Rugby Africa held in Kampala, where delegates from across the continent gathered. Kayangwe secured a seat on the Executive Board, filling a vacancy created during the meeting a move that places Uganda at the centre of decision-making in African rugby.
As a member of the Executive Committee, Kayangwe will help shape policies, competitions and development programmes guiding the sport across Africa. His campaign focused on strengthening Uganda’s voice within continental structures and accelerating rugby growth from grassroots to elite levels.
Kayangwe, who has served as President of Uganda Rugby Union since 2019 and was re-elected in 2023, now gives Uganda direct representation at the highest level of African rugby administration a significant step in the country’s rising sporting profile.
