In a moment of celebration and reflection, Uganda Martyrs Lubaga Women FC head coach Edward Kasozi Ssozi heaped praise on Finance Trust Bank for their continued support of women’s football after emerging as the Finance Trust FUFA Women Super League Coach of the Month for March.

Sharing the spotlight with Kampala Queens captain Shamirah Nalugya, who claimed the Player of the Month accolade, Kasozi used the platform not just to celebrate but to recognize the vital role played by sponsors, his team and the broader football community.

The awards ceremony, held at the Twed Towers Plaza, the headquarters of Finance Trust Bank was a testament to the bank’s ongoing commitment to empowering women through sports.

It was an afternoon that belonged to winners players, coaches and even journalists with Ismail Mulangwa and Sinan Rajub Ssenoga also being honored for their media contributions to the women’s game.

But the biggest applause was perhaps deserved by Kasozi, who steered Uganda Martyrs to a perfect month three games, three wins edging out stiff competition from Kampala Queens’ Asefa Firew Hailegabriel and Tooro Queens’ Ayesiga Rodgers.

“This award is not just mine,” Kasozi said passionately. “I want to thank the Uganda Martyrs fraternity, the players, the fans, and mostly the technical staff. They have been doing a tremendous job behind me organizing these girls, training them to see that at least they can perform on the pitch.”

More than anything, Kasozi’s words were laced with gratitude, especially toward Finance Trust Bank whose sponsorship of the monthly accolades has brought much-needed recognition and motivation to the women’s league.

“I would also like to thank the Finance Trust Bank for the support. They have done a tremendous job to see that these girls can play,” he added.

“The game we are in requires a lot, it needs that financial muscle. And I think Finance Trust Bank, they have supported us.”

While Kasozi was being hailed for his tactical brilliance and leadership, Shamirah Nalugya was recognized for her commanding presence on the pitch.

The Kampala Queens skipper had a standout March, notching three goals and one assist in just three games narrowly edging out her teammate Zainah Nandede, who also impressed with three goals and two assists.

Kasozi acknowledged the high level of competition this season, noting the strategic changes across the league. “The performance this time around has been stiff,” he said.

“We’ve seen Kampala Queens bringing in a foreign coach who has done a tremendous job. The type of football the teams have been playing has really improved.”

Despite facing early-season turbulence due to leadership changes and the departure of key players, Kasozi remained optimistic about the road ahead.

“When the season was starting, we got a transition in our leadership. We lost a lot of players. That costed us. But in the second round, we managed to sign up some replacements and improve somehow,” he explained.

Looking ahead, Kasozi made his ambitions clear: “Our target for the remaining season is winning the rest of the matches to see that at least we can attain a better position.”
