Cheptegei won gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Uganda long distance runner Joshua Cheptegei has been nominated for the Men’s World Athlete of the year award.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics Gold medalist is among the 10 nominees release by World Athletes to battle for the prestigious gong.

The other nominees include:- Eluid Kipchoge, Ryan Crouser, Mondo Duplantis, Daniel Stahl, Pedro Pichardo, Miltiadis Twntaglou, Damian Warner and Karsten Warholm.

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games (held in the summer of 2021), Cheptegei won Olympic Gold in the 5000m race, and Silver in the 10,000m.

The Ugandan also holds the world record in the 10,000 and 5000 meter races.

Sweden’s pole vaulter Armard Duplantis won the prestigious award in 2020 in an event that was ran virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The awarding ceremony will be held in December and World Athletics says further information on the event itself will be confirmed at the future date.
