The autumn air hung heavy over Kyadondo Rugby Grounds as the defending champions Heathens launched their title defence in the prestigious Uganda Cup.
They faced off against the spirited Impis of Makerere and, despite a rocky early start, emerged victorious.
The Impis struck first—two penalty kicks gave them a 6‑0 lead after a foul in the opening exchanges.
But Heathens refused to panic.
Veteran Michael Wokorach broke the deadlock with the first try for Heathens, though fullback Joseph Oyet missed the conversion.
Soon after, Michael Amollo powered over for a second try, and again Oyet’s boot mis‑fired.
When the second half began, Heathens surged ahead—Aaron Ofwoyirwoth scored another try, yet Oyet, still off‑target, missed the conversion once more.
Then Daniel Otema grounded the ball for Heathens’ fourth try.
At half‑time, Heathens led 10‑6, and this time Oyet finally got the conversion to bolster the lead.
Impis managed another penalty soon after the break, but failed to convert, keeping the scoreline static.
In the dying minutes, Oyet steadied his nerves and slotted a final try and conversion, sealing a 29‑6 triumph for Heathens.
Meanwhile, at the same venue, battle‑hardened Buffaloes built an imposing 22‑7 half‑time lead and went on to crush their opponents 63‑7.
Traditionally, the Uganda Cup marks the start of Uganda rugby’s season.
However, last year’s competition was postponed due to funding issues, a disruption that forced clubs to adapt—one of the reasons the Heathens came into this defence refreshed and determined.
With 20 men’s and 7 women’s teams set to take part this year, the stage is set for another memorable chapter—with the Heathens picking up exactly where they left off.
