Funds force Silverbacks out of the FIBA World Cup first window qualifiers- FUBA confirms


The Federation of Uganda Basketball Association has confirmed that the Uganda Men’s Basketball team, The Silverbacks won’t compete at the Upcoming FIBA World Cup Qualifiers first window in Angola.

This is after the National Council of Sports (NCS) communicated to the Federation that they were no funds to send the team for the first round qualifiers set for November 26-28.

The National Team needed UGX.380m to make the trip to Benguela.

“The Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations- FUBA, on a very sad note wishes to inform you that the Senior Men’s Basketball team (The Silverbacks) will not compete at the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers – window 1 in Benguela (Angola) from 26th to 28th November 2021.” FUBA president Nasser Sserunjogi said in a press release

“FUBA was informed by the Government of Uganda, through the National Council of Sports (NCS) that there was no money to support the team for this particular campaign. The Team needed approximately UGX.380m to make this trip.”

The Ugandan home-based players had started preps at the Africa Bible College in Lubowa for the upcoming tournament.

Silverbacks who finished sixth at the 2021 AfroBasket in Kigali are grouped with Mali, Cape Verde and Nigeria.
