As the Uganda Women’s National Basketball Team, the Gazelles, is preparing for the upcoming FIBA Africa Zone V Qualifiers, where they will vie for a spot at the 2025 Women’s Afrobasket.
In a significant development, Nicholas Natuhereza, the team’s former assistant coach, has been appointed as the new head coach.
He takes over from Goran Lojo, who stepped down to pursue another opportunity with Great Britain.
FUBA President Nasser Sserunjogi expressed strong confidence in Natuhereza’s ability to lead the team, stating,
“Nick Natuhereza will be the head coach for the Gazelles at the upcoming FIBA Zone V Qualifiers in Cairo, Egypt, from February 3rd to 8th.
While Goran Lojo was initially set to lead the team, he opted for another opportunity, and we wish him all the best.
However, we are confident that Nick’s vast experience and knowledge will guide the team to success.”
Natuhereza will be supported by Julius Lutwama as assistant coach, and Ugandan basketball legend Ben Komakech, who has earned a video analysis certification, will join the team as the video analyst and he will now stretch the same role to the Silverbacks.
Komakech has previously performed similar duties with the City Oilers.
In his acceptance statement, Natuhereza expressed enthusiasm for the new role
“I accept the challenge with great honor. It’s always a privilege to lead the team. Hopefully, we can achieve great things and qualify for the Afrobasket.”
With a track record of success, Natuhereza has led the UCU basketball teams to multiple championships and brings a wealth of experience to the Gazelles.
Having been involved in African basketball for years, he understands the dynamics and challenges the team will face.
The Gazelles will begin preparations on Tuesday, January 21st, with 15 players, including five foreign-based athletes, called up to the training camp ahead of the qualifiers.
