Just last year, a 25yr old defender seemed to be on top of his game; captain of Uganda’s record champions SC Villa who narrowly missed out on lifting the clubs first title in two decades due to a last league game loss to URA FC and smoothly being a regular in the cranes set up earning caps against African giants like Algeria.

When Gift Fred left Villa as a free agent to Tanzanian giants Young Africans on a 3yr deal in July last year, that looked like a big step forward in his career.

The trip to Dar es Salaam also meant he’d be teammates with his national team captain Khalid Aucho.

However that hasn’t been the case, Gift struggled to penetrate into the first team.

No doubt in the talent he is but it was always going to be an uphill task for him to displace Tanzanian center backs Dickson Job and captain Bakari Nondo who are mainstays not only at Yanga but on the Taifa stars-national team.

“For the experience, memories and love from every corner, I will always be grateful to have been part of this history.” – Gift’s farewell message to Yanga via his X with whom he won the 2023/24 Tanzania Premier League.

Gift Fred will join St.George FC in Ethiopia Premier League as a free agent after his contract at Young African Fc was terminated.
