Former Springboks fullback Zane Kirchner Joins Rugby Cranes Technical Team

The Uganda Rugby Union has announced the appointment former sprngboks fullback Zane Kirchner to the technical team of the national XVs side, Rugby cranes.

Kirchner joins the Cranes setup led by head coach Fred Mudoola, alongside assistants Leonard Lubambula, Timothy Mudoola, and Marvin Odongo in preparation for the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup, to be hosted in Uganda this July and doubles which as a qualifier for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Kirchner’s appointment follows a recommendation by national team consultant Nollis Marais, who has been supporting the Cranes’ technical and tactical development this year.

“Bringing in someone with Zane’s experience adds tremendous value to our setup,” said Rugby Cranes Team Manager Andy Ikopit. “He has competed at the highest level and brings insight that can help our players grow. His presence boosts our technical capacity as we build towards a critical year for Ugandan rugby.”

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with the Uganda Rugby Cranes. I’ve been following the growth of rugby in Uganda, and I’m excited to contribute to that journey. The talent is real, and I’m looking forward to working with the players and coaching team to help unlock the next level.” Kirchner said.

He featured as a fullback for the Bulls in Super Rugby and the Currie Cup. He earned 64 Currie Cup appearances, 64 points, and featured in 81 Super Rugby matches, scoring 105 points. He was instrumental in the Bulls’ Currie Cup wins in 2009 and 2010 and their Super Rugby title triumphs.
