FIFA has reaffirmed its support for the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) following the launch of the FUFA Women’s Super League Commercial Strategy, a move that signals a new phase for women’s football in Uganda.

The strategy aims to build a strong league brand, attract partners and secure long-term financial stability.

Its goal is clear, transform the Women’s Super League into a competition that can sustain itself and grow both on and off the pitch.

The initiative is part of FIFA’s Women’s Football Development Programme. FUFA was selected alongside Romania to pilot the commercial project, a decision that reflects confidence in Uganda’s progress in developing the women’s game.

Through the programme, FUFA will receive support to unlock and manage commercial rights while putting sustainable systems in place.

The strategy is expected to reduce reliance on traditional funding and create a clearer path toward professionalism.

FIFA’s backing follows years of steady work by FUFA to strengthen women’s football. The federation has implemented key development programmes, including campaigns to increase girls’ participation, improve league structures and raise club standards through licensing.

Investment in coach education has also boosted technical capacity, ensuring players are guided by trained professionals.

FIFA’s Lead for Women’s Football in Africa, Doreen Nabwire, said the world governing body remains committed to supporting FUFA as it implements the programme.

“FIFA remains committed to supporting FUFA in the implementation of these programmes as part of the continued efforts to grow and strengthen the women’s game at the local level,” Nabwire said.

With the commercial strategy underway, the FUFA Women’s Super League stands at a pivotal moment.

If executed well, it could reshape the women’s football landscape in Uganda, offering clubs greater stability, players better conditions and fans a stronger competition.
