Forward Fahad Bayo netted the lone goal Uganda Cranes needed to defeat Rwanda in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers group E game in Kigali.
Bayo netted in the first half to grant the Cranes their maiden victory in the qualification campaign.
He pounced onto a loose ball in the box from point-blank range in the game played at Stade de Kigali, Nyamiryambo.
Rwanda dominated proceedings for most of the game and fashioned the better chances of the game but it’s Uganda that made their count just before the break as Bayo pounced onto a loose ball following a Bobosi Byaruhanga’s shot to put Uganda in the lead.
From the restart, Rwanda pushed for an equaliser but Medi Kagere, Haruna Niyonzima and Muhadjir Hazizimana all failed to hit the mark from decent chances.
The victory takes Uganda top of group E with five points, ahead of Mali who are on four points but play Kenya later tonight.
The two sides will meet again on Sunday for the return leg in Kampala.
