Uganda Premier League side Express FC have officially appointed Morley Byekwaso as their new head coach ahead of the 2026/27 season, marking a significant step in the club’s rebuilding project.

The Red Eagles confirmed the appointment on Saturday through a video shared across the club’s official social media platforms, introducing the experienced tactician to their supporters.

In the unveiling video, Byekwaso walks onto the Nakivubo Stadium pitch before juggling a football and picking up the Express FC flag alongside a jersey bearing his name. Addressing the fans, he pledged his commitment to restoring the club’s fortunes.

“I am honored to lead this special club. Together we will believe, fight and build a special club. We respect Mukwano Gwa Bangi, square pass omuliro,” he said.

He concluded his message by expressing his excitement about leading the team in front of the Express faithful.

“I can’t wait to see the fans in the stands.”

Byekwaso has signed a two-year contract and succeeds Jimmy Kintu Mwera, who recently departed to take over as head coach of URA FC. The club is expected to unveil the rest of the technical team in the coming days.

The former SC Villa coach arrives with a wealth of experience from both club and international football. His coaching journey began at Lugazi United before joining KCCA FC, where he served in various capacities, including assistant coach, interim head coach and later permanent head coach.

He also had spells with Club Victoria University and Simba FC, while at national team level he guided the Uganda Hippos to the final of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and also served as interim Uganda Cranes head coach.

Most recently, Byekwaso was in charge of SC Villa during the 2024/25 campaign before leaving the club in June 2025.

The appointment also marks a return to familiar surroundings for Byekwaso, who represented Express FC as a player in 2008 after previous stints with KCCA, SC Villa and Rwanda’s Atraco FC.

His immediate task will be to rebuild the Express squad and restore the six-time league champions to the top end of the Uganda Premier League after they finished 10th last season.

The appointment follows the recent naming of Becky Cynthia Nakimera as the club’s Chief Executive Officer, underlining Express FC’s determination to usher in a new era both on and off the pitch.
