Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda through the Pamoja have won the bid that will see them jointly host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the continent’s most prestigious football tournament.
This was confirmed on Wednesday morning by CAF president Patrice Motsepe after the CAF executive committee meeting held in Cairo, Egypt.
Eighteen (18) out of Fifty four (54) countries have hosted AFCON unlike the three(3) East African countries who will now do so after the next three years.
After winning the bid, a happy and thankful FUFA President Hon.Eng. Moses Magogo spoke to the media saying;
“Am humbled and really pleasured that the dream has come true to take Uganda to AFCON and to bring AFCON to Uganda, am delighted to bring both”
“I want to thank the three Presidents of the three countries, they listened to us, supported and assured us that we shall host the most successful AFCON in modern times.” He added
“Am excited ! Because it’s time for Ugandans to welcome Africa to EastAfrica since Uganda will host a minimum of nine home matches and we also believe by nature the movement with in the countries will be easy by bus, air, railway and water.” He concluded
The three countries have been working closely together to develop their infrastructure heavily in sport facilities, communication systems, Accomodation and Transport centres.
For Sports, Uganda example have renovated their Mandela National stadium, Tanzania has built a new 60,000-seater stadium in Dar es Salaam, Kenya is renovating its Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi and many other grounds.
The AFCON 2027 is set to be a major boost for the development of football and economies in East Africa as the region with assurance that it will attract millions of visitors.
This will help to promote tourism and investment in East Africa. However, this preparation and organization will need financial assistance from CAF to host the tournament successfully.
