Diaspora: A weekend dominated by pre season friendlies – how Ugandan pros fared over the weekend


As many clubs prepare for the new seasons, many friendly games are being played and this is one of the weekends that had a number of Ugandans in action for their respective clubs.

Here is how Uganda pros fared over the weekend.

Starting off in Kenya, Benjamin Ochan was still out injured as his side AFC Leopard lost 2-0 to Tusker FC in the FKF Premier League match. Another Ugandan, Hashim Ssempala, who plays for Tusker FC was also absent from the matchday squad.

In Tanzania, Taddeo Lwanga was absent from the match day squad as his side Simba SC defeated NIC FC 4-0 in the Vodacom Premier League. Simba were crowned champions of the 2020/21 league title after the game. They finished the season with 83 points, nine ahead of second-placed Young Africans after 34 games.

Still in the Vodacom Premier League, both Nicholas Wadada and Mathias Kigonya were absent as their side, Azam FC narrowly defeated Ruvu SF away from home.

In Sweden, Isaak Ssewakambo started and featured for 64 minutes, while Ronald Mukiibi was absent as their side, Ostersunds FK suffered a 3-0 loss to IF ElfsBorg in the Swedish Allvensken. Ostersunds stay in relegation zone with 8 points garnered in 11 games.

In the USA, Mustafa Kizza was an unused substitute as Montreal Impact secured a dramatic 5-4 victory over Cincinnati FC in Major League Soccer (MSL). With the win, Montreal moves to 4th place on the log with 22 points in 13 games.

Still in MSL, Edward Kizza didn’t make the match day squad as his New England Revolution side secured a 1-0 away victory over Atlanta United to stay top of the Eastern Conference league with 27 points in 14 games.

In German, Herbert Bockhorn featured in a pre-season friendly as his side VFL Bochum shocked Dortmund 3-1. Silvère Ganvoula M’boussy netted twice while Simon Zoller netted the other for the newly-promoted side. Mats Hummels scored for Dotmund.

In Denmark, Moses Opondo was a second half substitute as his side, Odense Boldkub defeated Midtjylland 2-1 in their Danish SuperLiga opener. Still in the Danish SuperLiga, Robert Kakeeto was absent from the match day squad as his side, AaB Aalborg drew 2-all with Copenhagen FC.

In England, Jordan Obita featured for Wycombe Wanderers as they defeated Stevenage FC 1-0 in the pre season friendly game.

In Czech Republic, Isaac Mulene started for Viktoria Zizkov in a club friendly as they lost 4-1 to Mlada Boleslav.

In Israel, Fahad Bayo started and was subbed off midway the opening half as his Ashdod SC suffered a 2-1 loss to H. Beer-Sheva in the Toto Cup Ligat Al.
