Ugandan weight lifter Dan Tumukunde has spoken of his dream of becoming an World champion of the sport.
Tumukunde won 3 gold and 4 silver for a total of 7 medals in the 109+ Kg weight category during the 2023 Africa Youth and Junior Weightlifting championship that was held in Cairo Egypt.
“Away from the latest 2023 championship in Egypt, I have participated in both national and regional games like the Uzani Games Power Weekend IV and V U23 in Kenya and I won medals” noted
Tumukunde is among the weight lifters that have been selected to participate in 2024 All African Games.
“It has really been my struggle and effort plus hopes to be part of the team”. Tumukunde highlighted after being included in the team.
He added that the opportunity brings him alot of high hopes to establish a point that he really loves the sport of weight lifting and his dream of becoming a World champion.
” I have seen a lot of opportunities and new ones in weight lifting and I want one day to broaden weight lifting in Uganda because it had been misunderstood in Uganda”. The aspiring weight lifter mentioned
He believes weight lifting is away of bringing back strong Ugandans because it is a sport of strength, clears mental health issues and it can bring alot of opportunities including tourism.
Tumukunde promised of taking the sport as far as he can.
The 13th edition of All African Games will be held in the Ghanaian capital of Accra from 8th to 24th March, 2024.
With Tumukunde in focus Julius Ssekitoleko, Najib Kivumbi, Shaban Kimbowa, Davis Niyoyita, Robert Kaweesa, Paul Kigongo, Stephen Ojede, Lydia Nakidde, Swabura Mutesi and Aisha Namataka are the other weight lifters to represent Uganda at the Games.
