Cubs defeat Tanzania to retain CECAFA U17 title

With both teams already qualified to the U17 Africa Cup of Nations due in Morocco next year, Uganda edged past Tanzania 3-1 to lift the CECAFA U20 championship trophy on Tuesday evening at the Umuganda Stadium in Rubavu, Rwanda .

Three second half goals by Ivan Irinimbabazi, Travis Mutyaba and Juma Ibrahim were enough for Uganda to retain the trophy they won two years back.Tanzania got a consolation goal through an own goal by Vicent Mulema.

The first half ended with even scores and it was in the second half that the deadlock was broken when Irinimbabazi rose high to head home off  Vicent Mulema’s freekick In the 62nd minute

Mutyaba doubled the scoreline in the 80th minute when he superb dribbled past three Tanzanian players to unleash the ball into the back of the net.

Tanzania got a goal back in 88th minute after Uganda defender Muleme connected the ball into his own net.

But in the added minutes, the Cubs got the third from a spot kick after Mutyaba was bought down in the forbidden area by Omar Hassan. Juma stepped up and calmly placed the ball rolling into the back of the net with Tanzanian goalie diving in the different direction.

Coming to the final, both Tanzania and Uganda had already secured their berths to the 2021 AFCON U-17 finals in Morocco.
