Record National Basketball League (NBL) champions, City Oilers, suffered a 79–62 defeat at the hands of the UCU Canons in their final game of the first round on Friday night at the YMCA in Wandegeya. The loss marks their sixth in 11 games so far this season.

The Oilers stayed within striking distance for most of the game, trailing by just six points heading into the fourth quarter. However, UCU stepped up in the final stretch, outscoring the Oilers 27–16 to seal a commanding win.

Despite City Oilers’ veteran Ben Komaketch putting up a game-high 17 points, it was UCU’s duo of Joel Kayiira and Alier Jongroor who led the Canons to victory. Both players posted double-doubles, with Kayiira tallying 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Jongroor added 12 points and 12 rebounds.

In the women’s game earlier that evening, KCCA Leopards’ Sharon Kirabo delivered a dominant performance with a 26-point, 10-rebound double-double to help her team defeat Nabisunsa 76–55.
