With over 35,000 fans, the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala was abuzz with excitement as Uganda’s Cranes took on defending champions Senegal in the quarterfinals of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Despite their best efforts, Uganda’s dreams of a CHAN semifinal appearance were dashed by a single goal. Oumar Ba’s clinical finish in the 62nd minute proved to be the decisive moment in the match. Ba’s low right-footed shot past Joel Mutakubwa came after Libasse Guèye’s teasing cross evaded Uganda’s center-backs.
Uganda’s attackers had their chances, but they couldn’t find the equalizer. Allan Okello’s rasping drive before half-time tested Senegal’s goalkeeper Marc Diouf, while substitute Ivan Ahimbisibwe was twice denied in the second half. Gavin Kizito’s header from an Okello corner in the 68th minute sailed just wide of the post with Diouf beaten.
In the end, Senegal’s defensive steel held firm, and they advanced to the semifinals with a 1-0 win. Despite the defeat, Uganda’s campaign has been historic, reaching the knockout stages for the first time in six CHAN appearances. Coach Morley Byekwaso’s side may have fallen short, but their performance across CHAN 2024 ensures their journey will be remembered as the start of something significant.
